Criminal Defense Investigator, Medford, OR

The Federal Public Defender provides indigent defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.
• Participate in the Federal Public Defender teams representing indigent defendants charged with federal crimes ranging from trespass to murder to complex fraud. 
• Locate people, evidence, and personal property; conduct client and witness interviews, gather records, take photographs of crime scenes and evidence. 
• Write comprehensive descriptive reports on work completed, including mitigation reports, andassists attorneys in court at hearings, trials and sentencing.
• Testify at court proceedings.
 •Frequent travel is required within the district, including overnight or longer trips, as well as lessfrequent travel outside of the district.
Required Qualifications:
• A demonstrated commitment to indigent criminal defense.
• 3 years of specialized experience in criminal defense investigation, or related experience.
          o A relevant Bachelors degree may be substituted for 1 year of experience, and a relevant Masters degree or JD may be substituted for an additional year of experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of fact and mitigation investigation principles, methods and techniques.
• The ability to identify and evaluate pertinent facts;
• The ability to identify and develop theories and bases for mitigation and relief.
• Good judgment exercised in a mature, diplomatic manner.
• A general understanding of criminal law and federal criminal procedure is required.
• Must be computer and social media literate, familiar with Windows OS, and be proficient with MicroSoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat, and Accurint (or similar).
• A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and applicable insurance.
• A demonstrated commitment and comfort working with diverse communities and with clients from a range of backgrounds is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with document review and analysis in a litigation support platform, such as CaseMap is helpful.
• Proficiency creating of demonstrative visuals using trial presentation tools, and experience using voice recognition software, or dictation equipment.
• English-Spanish Bilingual skills.
Salary and Compensation: This is a full-time position with federal judiciary salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience. The starting salary ranges from, $64,649 to $108,885 (JSP 11 to 14) based on experience and with promotion potential. Current federal employees are subject to Grade and Step matching rules per Judiciary policy.
Compensation also includes 10 paid federal holidays, 13 paid sick days annually, and 13 paid vacation days annually (to start), health insurance, life insurance, retirement contribution, and the Thrift Savings Plan.
